The New Year started off strong and continues to show an upward trend with over $588 million of venture capital invested in 45 U.S based companies during this reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $13.07 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period is up 13% over last weeks $520 million.

Geographically, California received more than 44% of the total venture capital invested this period. California was home to 18 venture backed companies and three of the nation's top five deals. Following California was Massachusetts, where 10 companies raised $169.57 million. The largest financing in California this period was by Peninsula Pharmaceuticals for $57.9 million. Peninsula Pharmaceuticals is a privately owned, specialty pharmaceutical company focused on licensing, developing and commercializing anti-infective products for the North American and European markets.
The Biotech sector raised the most venture capital this period with 43%. A total of 10 Biotech companies raised $251.28 million in venture financings. The largest financing in the Biotech sector was by Peninsula Pharmaceuticals.
Companies raising their Series B round of funding represented 35% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest Series B financing was by Threshold Pharmaceuticals for a total of $41 million. Threshold Pharmaceuticals is a pharmaceutical company focused on the development of multiple cancer drugs targeting the unique metabolic properties of tumors.
