Over $326 million of venture capital was invested in 29 U.S.-based companies during this weeks reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $11.24 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period is up by 39% from last week’s $235 million.

What’s Hot: California, Software, and Series A financings.

Geographically, 9 California companies raised $73 million in venture financings. The largest venture financing in California this period was into InSound Medical, Inc. for $17.2 million. InSound Medical, Inc. is a Newark based company that manufactures devices for the hearing impaired.

The software sector raised 31% of the venture capital this period. 13 software companies raised over $103 million in venture financing. The largest venture financing was by WildTangent, Inc. for $16.5 million. WildTangent, Inc. is headquartered in Redmond, WA and provides multimedia graphics, animation, and other interactive applications.

Companies raising their Series A round led this weeks venture capital activity. Series A companies represented 40% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest Series A financing was into IntelliRisk Management which is a provider of customer management solutions specializing in customer retention, accounts receivable management, and collections services.
