Venture capital activity has bounced back up this reporting period increasing by 164% over the prior period. $401 million in venture capital was invested in 35 companies during the period.

In addition, eight companies began trading on Wall Street with over $2.4 billion raised in equity through IPOs. The eight IPO’s this reporting period are as follows:

1. Domino’s Pizza for $336.7 million
2. Home Banc Mortgage for $225 million
3. Phase Forward for $39.4 million
4. Greenfield Online for $58 million
5. Freescale Semiconductor for $1.58 billion
6. QC Holdings for $70 million
7. Collegiate Funding Services for $150 million
8. Xenogen for $29.4 million

CapitalHunter.com identified that $401 million of venture capital was invested in 35 U.S.-based companies during this week’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $11.46 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period increased by 164% over last week’s $152 million.

What’s Hot: California, Software, and Series B.

Geographically,14 California companies raised $179.1 million in venture financings. The largest venture financing in California this period went into SkinMedica for $30 million. Skinmedica is a Carlsbad is a company that focuses on the treatment of skin conditions and currently markets a full line of cosmeceutical products sold only though physicians.

The software sector raised a little over 21% of the venture capital this period. Ten software companies raised over $89 million in venture financing.

Companies raising their Series B round of financing led this week’s venture capital activity. Series B companies represented 36% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest Series B financing was into Trubion Pharmaceuticals. Trubion Pharmaceuticals raised $32 million and is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of novel medicines to treat inflammatory disease and cancer.
