CEO, Ken Xie, was able to secure $30 million in a Series D equity financing from prominent venture investors: Redpoint Ventures and MeriTech Capital Partners

Myogen, Inc. is a later stage privately held company located in Westminister, CO and is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of small molecule therapeutics for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. CEO, Dr. J. William Freytag, secured $40 million in a series D round from tier 1 venture capitalists: New Enterprise Associates, InterWest Partners, Sequel Venture Partners, Perseus-Soros BioPharmaceutical Fund LLP, Pacific Rim Ventures, JPMorgan Partners and CMEA Ventures

Zilliant, Inc. is a later stage privately held company located in Austin, TX and provides price and revenue optimization software solutions to help companies define and manage their ecommerce pricing so as to maximize profits and increase customer value for both on and offline businesses. CEO, Greg Peters, was able to secure $14.5 million in equity from venture investors: Austin Ventures, Trellis Partners, ABS Ventures, and JP Morgan Partners

EQUITY INVESTMENTS

Total equity capital raised by U.S. companies this week was $497 million. Below are straightforward graphs so that you can quickly see how the equity investments were distributed by Geography, Industry and Stage of Development:

GEOGRAPHY

Virginia companies raised 28% of the total $497 million in equity raised in the United States this past week. One of the larger equity deals in Virginia this reporting period was MCG Capital Corporation an Arlington based publicly traded company. MCG Capital Corporation is traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker symbol MCGC. MCG Capital Corporation is a financial services company that lends to and invests in small- and medium-sized private U.S. companies within the communications, information services, media and technology industry sectors. The company has raised $101 million in equity through a follow-on public offering.

INDUSTRY

Biotech companies received 25% of the total $497 million in equity raised in the United States this period. The largest biotech deal this past week was Myogen, Inc.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT

NASDAQ companies raised 37% of the equity this period. MCG Capital Corporation was the largest NASDAQ deal this reporting period.

VENTURE CAPITAL

Venture capitalists in the United States invested 3% more dollars this past week compared to the week before and funded 20 Companies for a total of $229 million.
