“What’s Hot” this reporting period are venture backed companies based in California operating in the biotechnology industry and have raised their Series C of financing.

No IPO’s this week…

CapitalHunter.com was able to verified that $215 million of venture capital was invested in 19 U.S.-based companies during this week’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $11.32 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period decreased by 43% from last week’s $337 million. Have a great Labor Day weekend. Geographically, 9 California companies raised $119.3 million in venture financings. The largest private venture financing in California this period was into MediciNova raised $44 million. MediciNova is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on acquiring and accelerating the global development and commercialization of innovative pharmaceutical products.

The Biotechnology sector raised 38% of the venture capital this period. Three Communications company raised $83 million in venture financing. MediciNova was the largest financing in this category.

Companies raising their Series C round of financing led this week’s venture capital activity. Series C financings represented 42% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest later stage financing was into MediciNova.
