CapitalHunter.com was able to verified that $27 million of venture capital was invested in 18 U.S.-based companies during this week’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $11.5 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period increased by 34% from last week’s $155 million. The decrease is probably explained by the short week.
Geographically,7 California companies raised $74.87 million in venture financings. The largest private venture financing in California this period was into Proofpoint, Inc. raised $20 million. Proofpoint is a Cupertino based company that provides anti-spam software and messaging security solutions for large enterprises to stop spam, protect against email viruses and ensure compliance with corporate policies and regulations through their messaging infrastructure.
The software sector raised 27% of the venture capital this period. Four software companies raised $58 million in venture financing. Proofpoint, Inc. was the largest financing in this category.
Companies raising their Series B round of financing led this week’s venture capital activity. Series B financings represented 32% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest Series B financing was into MinuteClinic . The company raised $15 million and operates health care centers designed for the treatment of common ailments like strep throat, ear, bladder and sinus infections, and for screenings and immunizations. The result is a highly accessible and convenient care system that saves patients, employers and insurers time and money.
