What’s Hot this reporting period are venture backed companies based in California operating in the software industry and have raised their Series B round of financing.

This weeks IPO are:

1. Valley Bancorp. for $15 million.
2. Educate, Inc. for $55 million.
3. Beacon Rooking Supply for $110.5 million.
4. Cogent for $216 million.

CapitalHunter.com was able to verified that $262 million of venture capital was invested in 23 U.S.-based companies during this week’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $11.39 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period increased by 27% from last week’s $207 million.

Geographically,11 California companies raised $117.8 million in venture financings. The largest private venture financing in California this period was into Greenfield Networks raised $21.5 million. Greenfield Networks is a Sunnyvale is focused on delivering innovative networking solutions for enterprise and metro markets: Ethernet switch silicon technology.
The software sector raised 33% of the venture capital this period. Eight software companies raised $88.3 million in venture financing. Avamar Technologies was the largest financing in this category raising $15 million in venture financing. Avamar Technologies provides enterprises with data management solutions.
Companies raising their Series B round of financing led this week’s venture capital activity. Series B financings represented 42% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest Series B financing was into Sopherion Therapeutics. The company raised $47 million and is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel anti-cancer therapies for patients suffering with advanced cancer, including metastatic disease.
