GEOGRAPHY

Massachusetts based companies raised 30% of the total $299 million in equity raised in the United States this past week. Genpath is a Cambridge based privately held early stage company. The company develops medicines to treat cancer and other genetic diseases. The company completed a Series B round of $42.7 million dollars from prestigious venture investors Flagship Ventures, Oxford Bioscience Partners and Highland Capital Partners.

INDUSTRY

Software companies received 33% of the total $299 million in equity raised in the United States this period. Acme Packet, Inc. a Woburn, MA based early stage privately held company. Acme Packet, Inc. develops carrier-class applications for network service providers to transport interactive voice, video, and multimedia across IP network borders. The company raised $15 million in its second round of financing. This investment brings the total raised to date to $31 million. Advanced Technology Ventures joins as a new investor, with initial backers Menlo Ventures and Canaan Partners also participating in the round.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT

Early stage privately held companies raised 46% of the equity this period. GenPath Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The Company was founded by leading Harvard Medical School cancer researchers, Ronald DePinho M.D. and Lynda Chin M.D. and supported in the scientific and business arenas by leaders in the fields of drug development, cancer genetics, and genomics.

VENTURE CAPITAL

Venture capitalists in the United States invested about the same amount this period as in the prior week. A total of 20 companies raised venture capital for a total of $209 million.
