What’s Hot this reporting period are venture backed companies based in California operating in the software industry and have raised their Series A round of financing.

On Wall Street CapitalHunter.com identified the following IPO’s and Secondary Offerings:

1. New Century Financial Corp. had its initial public offering this week for $783 million and trades under the ticker NEW.
2. PeopleSupport had its initial public offering this week for $33.2 million and trades under the ticker PSPT.
3. Eagle Hospitality Properties Trust, Inc. had its initial public offering this week for $142.2 million and trades under the ticker EHP.
4. Quanta Services, Inc. raised additional capital through a secondary offering for $100.6 million and trades under the ticker PWR.
5. SI Internationalraised additional capital through a secondary offering for $48.1 million and trades under the ticker SINT.

CapitalHunter.com was able to verify that $411 million of venture capital was invested in 33 U.S.-based companies during this week’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $12.45 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period increased by 57% from last week’s $262 million.
Geographically,13 California companies raised $159.04 million in venture financings. The largest private venture financing in California this period was into NuCore Technology raised $25 million. NuCore Technology is a Sunnyvale based company that develops digital imaging chips for digital cameras, camcorders and security cameras.
The software sector raised 35% of the venture capital this period. Fifteen software companies raised $139.3 million in venture financing. CreekPath Systems, Inc. a Colorado based company was the largest financing in this category raising $22 million in venture financing. CreekPath Systems provides efficient storage utilization through integrated discovery, visualization, reporting and management of storage resources to simplify and automate complex storage management tasks.
Companies raising their Series A round of financing led this week’s venture capital activity. Series A financings represented 32% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest Series A financing was into North Carolina based Cellective Therapeutics. The company raised $27.5 million and is a drug development company pursuing novel therapeutic monoclonal antibodies in the areas of autoimmune disease and oncology by leveraging their vast understanding and experience in the field of B-cell biology.
