Over $416.8 million of venture capital was invested in 30 U.S based companies during this reporting period. 4 more companies raised venture capital than the preceding period and there was an increase of 50% in the total capital raised. The average deal size was approximately $13.9 million.

Geographically, California continued to lead the nation, receiving more than 33% of total venture capital invested. California was home to the largest number of funded ventures (12) and two of the nation's top five deals. Following California was Illinois, where 1 company raised $125 million. The largest financing in California this period was by Saegis Pharmaceuticals.

|
Nearly half (61%) of the venture capital invested this reporting period went to companies in the Software sector. Nine (18) companies in this sector raised funding, led by a $125 million investment in Archipelago, which provides a platform for electronic trading.
|
|
|
|

As shown in the chart below, 43% of the companies that raised venture capital this period are companies that raised their later round of funding. The largest later round financings was by Archipelago for a total of $125 million equity from General Atlantic Partners.
