Over $107.7 million of venture capital was invested in 17 U.S based companies during this reporting period. 13 fewer companies raised venture capital than the preceding period and there was a decrease of 74% in the total capital raised. The average deal size was approximately $6.34 million.

Geographically, California continued to lead the nation, receiving more than 41% of total venture capital invested. California was home to the largest number of funded ventures (6) and two of the nation's top five deals. Following California was New Jersey, where 1 company raised $35 million. The largest financing in California this period was by Big Bear Networks.

|
|
|
Nearly half (49%) of the venture capital invested this reporting period went to companies in the Communications sector. Two (2) companies in this sector raised funding, led by a $35 million investment in Vonage Holding, Corp. a provider of high-speed Internet-based digital telephone services.
|
|
|
|
|
As shown in the chart below, 52% of the companies that raised venture capital this period are companies that raised their Series B round of funding. The largest Series B round of financing was by Vonage for a total of $35 million equity from New Enterprise Associates and other venture capitalists.
