What’s Hot this reporting period are venture backed companies based in California operating in the Biotechnology industry and that have raised their Later round of financing.

CapitalHunter.com was able to verify that $297 million of venture capital was invested in 20 U.S.-based companies during this week’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately $14.85 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period increased by 70% from last week’s $175 million.
Geographically, 8 California companies raised $170.6 million in venture financings. The largest private venture financing in California this period was into Intarcia Therapeutics who raised $50 million. Intarcia Therapeutics is a Emeryville based company which is developing therapies for the treatment of cancer, immunological, and infectious diseases.
The biotechnology sector raised 38% of the venture capital this period. Four biotechnology companies raised $112 million in venture financing. The largest private venture financing in the biotechnology sector this period was into Intarcia Therapeutics.
Companies raising their later round of financing led this week’s venture capital activity. Later stage financings represented 51% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest later round financing was into Intarcia Therapeutics.
