This reporting period companies based in California operating in the Biotechnology industry and that have raised their Series A round of financing led the pack in the amount of venture financing raised. Also, there was two IPOs this reporting period.

CapitalHunter.com was able to verify that $562 million of venture capital was invested in 35 U.S.-based companies during this week’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately 16.06 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period increased by 65% compared to last periods $341 million.

Geographically, 17 California companies raised $330.3 million in venture financings which represents 59% of the total venture capital invested this reporting period. The largest private venture financing in California this period was into Verus Pharmaceuticals. Verus Pharmaceuticals raised $78 million and is a San Diego based pediatric-oriented pharmaceutical company identifying, developing and delivering solutions for pediatric asthma and allergies.
The biotechnology sector raised 39% of the venture capital this period. Six biotechnology companies raised $215.8 million in venture financing. The largest private venture financing in the biotechnology sector this period was into Verus Pharmaceuticals.
Companies raising their Series A round of financing led this week’s venture capital activity. Series A financings represented 40% of the total venture capital deployed this period. The largest private venture financing in Series A stage financing this period was into Eos Airlines, a Purchase, New York based airline that offers high-end, business-class only service between New York and London.
